No Day But Today!
JONATHAN LARSON

Jonathan Larson was the brilliant man who wrote the musical "Rent". He lived in Greenwich Villiage in New York City.
He died only hours before he was suppose to see "Rent" performed for the first time on stage. He was only 35 years old.

ABOUT RENT

"Rent" is about a group of people living in New York City. They are struggling to overcome many problems
in thier lives and to be happy. "Rent is a show that gives us another way to look at things. It teaches love, not fear.

THE CHARACTERS

Mark is hoping to be a film producer and is working on making a film throughout the show. He is kind of like the narrator
of the show. He lives with Roger. He used to date Moureen who dumped him for another woman.

Roger: "One song, glory, one song before I go."
He is Mark's roomate. He has aids and is attempting to write one last song before he dies. His girlfriend, April, had
commited suicide 6 months earlier when she found out she had aids. He falls in love with Mimi.

Moureen Johnson: "Only thing to do is jump over the moon."
Moureen is an aspiring actress. She used to date Mark, but then dumped him for Joanne.

Joanne: "Women, can't live with them or without them."
Joanne is a lawyer and dates Moureen.

Tom Collins: "I think they meant it when they said you can't buy love."
Collins teaches computer science at colleges. He falls in love with Angel.

Angel: "Today for you, tomorrow for me."
Angel plays the drums on street corners for money. He falls in love with Collins. He teaches the group how to be happy.

Benny:
Benny owns the apartment building where Mark and Roger live. He used to date Mimi, but is now dating Alison
(Who we never see on stage.)

Lyrics to my favorite songs:

RENT:
How do you document real life when real life's gettine more like fiction each day? Headlines, bread lines,
blow my mind and now this deadline, eviction or pay. Rent! How do you write a song when the chords sound wrong
though they once sounded right and rare? But the notes are sour. Where is the power you once had to ignite the
air? And we're hungry and frozen, some life that we've chosed. How we gonna pay, how we gonna pay, how we gonna
pay last year's rent? We light candles. How do you start a fire when there's nothing to burn and it feels like
something's stuck in your flue? How can you generate heat when you can't feel you feet and they're turning blue?
You light up a mean blaze with posters and screen plays. How we gonna pay, how we gonna pay, how we gonna pay last
year's rent? Don't scream Maureen. It's me, Joanne, your substitute production manager. Hey, hey, hey! Did you eat?
Don't change the subject Maureen, but darling, you haven't eaten all day. You won't throw up. You won't throw up. The
digital delay didn't blow up exactly. There may have been one teeny, tiny spark. You're not calling Mark! How do you
stay on your feet when on every street it's trick or treat and tonight it's trick. Welcome back to town. Oh, I should
lie down. Everything's brown and, oh I feel sick. Where is he? Getting dizzy. How we gonna pay? How we gonna pay?
How we gonna pay last year's rent? Alison, baby, you sound sad. I don't believe those two after everything I've done.
Ever since our wedding I'm dirt. They'll see Joan help them all out in the long run. The music ignites tonight with
passionate fire. Maureen, I'm not a theater person. The narratin crackles and pops with incendiary wit. Could never
be a theater person. Zoom in as they burn the past to the ground and I'm feeling the heat of the future's glow. Hello,
hello? Maureen? Your equipment won't work? Okay, alright, I'll go! How do you leave the past behind when it keeps
finding ways to get to your heart? It reaches way down deep and tears you inside out 'til you're torn a part. Rent!
How can you connect in an age where strangers, land lords, lovers, your own blood cells betray? What binds the fabric
together when the raging, shifting winds of change keep ripping away? Draw a line in the sand and then make a stand. Use
your camera to spar, use you guitar. When they act tough you call their bluff. We're not gonna pay, we're not ganna pay,
we're not gonna pay last year's rent, this year's rent, next year's rent. Rent, rent, rent, rent, rent. We're not gonna
pay rent, 'cause everything is rent!
